For years, a Wednesday-night dinner conversation in Union ended the same way. Someone would ask where to go. Someone else would list the three usable spots on US-42, shrug, and suggest driving to Florence or into Cincinnati. That reflex is what makes 2026 feel different. Between a fine-dining Italian opening on Old Union Road, a new sandwich anchor across from Kroger, and the tenant list finally filling in at Union Promenade, the short answer to "where should we go" now has more than three entries. The city's own officials have said the quiet part out loud.
"The common theme that always came up is, we'd like to have places where you don't have to drive to Florence, you don't have to drive to Cincinnati," said Union City Commissioner John Mefford when the Bella Vita news broke in May. Mayor Larry Solomon echoed the sentiment. That framing, from a sitting commissioner, is the thesis of this post: Union's dining default is being rebuilt in real time along a single US-42 corridor, and the change now includes the fine-dining tier that used to require a bridge crossing.
The tell: Bella Vita on Old Union Road
The clearest signal is at 9914 Old Union Road, a space that formerly housed the Farmstand Market and Cafe, which closed in December after eight years of business. That address had been quiet for months. It now belongs to Bella Vita Ristorante, an Italian concept from three local partners: Kevin Preston, John Daugherty and Rob Trump.
A few specifics worth holding onto before your first visit:
- Menu direction. Authentic Italian food prepared by a local Italian chef.
- Room size. The building is capable of holding 74 people, with the owners suggesting actual seating will run below that.
- Outdoor seating. The restaurant will also feature an outdoor patio with lights and greenery.
- Service model. Dinner service, Wednesdays through Saturdays, and brunch with all-day service on Sundays.
Read the founder quote closely and you can hear the local-market gap that motivated the whole project. "From a family perspective, you have to go down to Cincinnati to really get a good meal…," Preston told LINK nky, before explaining that he decided to build the room himself. That is not a marketing line. It is the same complaint every Union household has made at 6:15 p.m. on a Tuesday. The difference is that this time the person making it is the one signing the lease.
What Union Promenade actually delivered
The other half of the shift is a mile up the road. Union Promenade, a 62-acre mixed use development located in Union, Kentucky located along State Highway US 42. The project incorporates multiple uses in a horizontal fashion, is no longer a rendering. As of July 2025 the tenant list opened in waves, and it is worth breaking down by how a resident actually uses it, not by the developer's site plan.
Weeknight quick meals
Chick Fil A, Wing Stop, McAllister's Deli, Schlotskys Deli and Cinnabon Bakery, Tropical Smoothie, Taco Mama, Teriyaki Madness, and The Works Pizza Co. This is the tier that most directly replaces the "just drive to Florence" habit. A family that used to plan around Houston Road can now stay on US-42.
Sit-down and drinks
El Asadero Bar and Grill and Fairway Room and Lounge. Add Bella Vita a mile south and the sit-down count in Union, for the first time, is not something you can hold in one hand.
Groceries and prep
The Strip (butcher) is the single most interesting food tenant for anyone who cooks at home. A dedicated butcher in a Northern Kentucky suburb is rare, and it changes what a Saturday grocery run looks like when the alternative was Kroger meat counter or a drive to Jungle Jim's.
Everything else in the same trip
Cincinnati Children's, United Dairy Farmers, Elite MedSpa, Glamour Nails, Ace of Fades, HotWorx, Fifth Third Bank, Pure Barre, Club Pilates, and Luxe Suites. The reason this matters for dining is that these tenants pull traffic to the corridor at times of day that keep the restaurants busy. A pediatric visit at 10 a.m. and a Cinnabon on the way out is a use case the old Union did not have.
The Penn Station signal
The Bella Vita story is easy to read as a one-off. The Penn Station opening earlier this year is the counterweight that shows the corridor is real.
Conveniently located at 9124 US-42 in Union (41091), the new store is across the street from Kroger in a busy retail corridor. It is owned by franchisees Keith Gavin, Andrew Brennan and Lachlan McLean under Quaker Hospitality Holdings, and per the operator this is his 24th Penn Station restaurant. That is a meaningful number. A 24-store operator does not put a location on US-42 unless the traffic study says the corridor will support it for the next decade.
Hours are Monday-Saturday from 10:30 am-10pm and Sundays from 11am- 9pm, which is worth memorizing if you have kids in evening activities. The old Union answer to a 9:30 p.m. dinner was cereal at home.
Building a Saturday around it
Here is where the shift stops being theoretical and becomes something you can put on a calendar. The pieces that used to live in different towns now all sit within a ten-minute radius.
Morning. The Boone County Farmers Market runs at 1961 Burlington Pike, Burlington, KY 41005 with the season running May 9 – October 31, 2026 and summer Saturday hours of 9am-2pm from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Fifteen minutes from most Union addresses.
Late morning. A stop at The Strip in Union Promenade for the week's steaks or a whole chicken, since the farmers market handles produce and the butcher handles protein.
Afternoon. Whatever the family calendar demands. The Promenade's non-food tenants absorb it. Pilates, a haircut at Ace of Fades, a birthday-gift run.
Evening. This is the part that did not exist a year ago. Wednesday through Saturday, Bella Vita is dinner. Sunday, Bella Vita is brunch. Any other night, the Promenade sit-downs or Penn Station cover it without a highway.
If you want to zoom out one more weekend, the 2026 Kenton County Fair runs July 13–18 with a special community kickoff event on Saturday, July 11 at 2836 Harris Pike in Independence. It is not in Union, but it is close enough that the corridor logic still holds: eat locally, then drive to the thing.
What to actually watch for
Two things worth tracking over the next three months, both grounded in the research and not in speculation.
First, whether Bella Vita holds to the announced service window. The owners were candid that the only thing they're currently waiting on, Preston said, is the bar top. Openings slip. A late-June target that becomes mid-July is not a warning sign, it is standard for a from-scratch buildout with an outdoor patio.
Second, whether the Promenade's second wave fills in on schedule. The city's public tenant list mixes stores that opened last summer with names that are still on paper. If you are the kind of resident who tracks which spaces have paper on the windows, walking the site once a month tells you more than any press release.
The takeaway for anyone who has lived in Union for a while: the mental model that made you default to a Florence or Cincinnati drive was correct as recently as 2023. It is not correct in July 2026. The corridor along US-42, from Old Union Road up through the Promenade and across from Kroger, is now a real dining district by any honest count, and the arrival of a fine-dining Italian room is the piece that closes the argument.
